While sending multiple data (repeating bytes 0, 0, 8, 5) over SPI and without MISO connected, the SPDR of an AVR shows sometimes the value 128 in the MCU monitor. I had assumed that SPDR is continously equal to 0.

Yes, you are right, in this case SPDR should be always 0.
Interesting that it only happens when sending the value 5.
And it's not random, it always happen there.
I will have a look.

I think this issue is solved at Rev 1285.
